About Project

The Krause Gateway Centre comprises the new corporate headquarters of Kum & Go and the offices of other Krause Group companies. It is located in the Western Gateway of downtown Des Moines, which has undergone an urban renaissance in recent years.

Since its inception in 1959, Kum & Go shops have been deeply rooted in Iowa and have also expanded into many surrounding states. In almost 60 years of operation, the shops and the brand have played an important role in the communities they serve. The company's sense of responsibility to the community and employees has been the foundation for the new corporate headquarters.

The location offers all the amenities of a bustling city within a couple of blocks, including industrial, commercial, residential, cultural, and culinary areas. Moreover, the site is opposite one of the most important elements of a city center: an urban park. A mix of historical and contemporary buildings surrounds the Pappajohn Sculpture Park, which was immediately considered an extension of the project site. The adoption of the sculpture park, the study of the height difference between Ingersoll Street and Grand Avenue, and the value of civic engagement shared by Kyle Krause and the Renzo Piano Building Workshop led to the concept of transparency and openness at street level. The building is not a barrier but, on the contrary, encourages a literal two-way dialogue between those working inside the building, the public, and the city. The experience on the upper floors of the offices is also enhanced by the fully glazed façade that allows a 360° view and the extra-long overhangs that protect the interior spaces from direct solar radiation.

In the large transit areas, spot Le Perroquet, either track-mounted or pendant, characterize the spaces with their subtle presence. In the corridors, minimal and adjustable Laser Blade lights supplement the natural light entering through large glass surfaces when necessary.
